About Sharing Images
Just because you find something posted online doesn't mean you have the legal right to upload it into your own document. The laws surrounding copyright in the United States are vague and often difficult to parse, but you do have some protections. That said, we recommend being safe rather than sorry, so here are a handful of resources that will help you find video, audio, and images that you can freely put in your website. Many of them require some form of acknowledgment, so make sure you are checking to see who the authors and owners are!
Photographs and Stock Images

- Compfight"An image search engine tailored to efficiently locate images for blogs, comps, inspiration, and research"; primarily pulls images from Flickr.

- Art Institute of ChicagoUnrestricted access to thousands of images from the Art Institute's digital archive. Each image is available to share and download under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license.
- Smithsonian Open AccessWith new platforms and tools, you have easier access to nearly 3 million 2D and 3D digital items from the Smithsonian's collections—with many more to come.
Creative Common Audio Resources
- Community AudioPart of the internet Archive, this site contains thousands of community-contributed Creative Commons licensed audio recordings. Item are free to use, per each specified Creative Commons license.
- SoundCloudSoundClouds' dedicated Creative Commons page allows you to find tracks that you can use for free according to the terms provided in the license.
- Youtube's Audio LibraryYouTube provides a library of over 150 royalty-free instrumental tracks that can be added to your YouTube videos as background music.
Creative Common Video Resources
- Vimeo Creative CommonsVimeo has a large collection of free to use videos protected under a Creative Commons license.
- Youtube - Limit Search to Creative CommonsWhen searching youtube, use the filters to limit your search to Creative Commons material.
- Internet Archive - Stock FootageA collection of stock footage clips submitted by Internet Archive users. These clips are designed to be used in other videos.
