Syllabi Requests

Accessing Course Syllabi

Course syllabi can be a valuable resource for former and current Ohio Wesleyan students. Former students sometimes need a course syllabus to demonstrate the specific topics and learning objectives of a course in order to obtain graduate or transfer credit. Current students may be interested in the structure and content of a course over the last few years as an indicator of what to generally expect in future offerings of the course. To help fill these needs, Ohio Wesleyan collects course syllabi from faculty every semester and makes them available upon request.

FAQs

How do I request a past course syllabus?

Fill out the Course Syllabi Request Form.

*Please Note: While OWU does its best to collect syllabi from all courses taught, we cannot guarantee complete availability of syllabi for any given term.

How do I request the syllabus for a current course?

If requesting for the current semester, start by filling out the Course Syllabi Request Form. Depending on the timing of the request, access to the most current semester syllabi may not yet be available given submission schedules. If this situation occurs, students will be advised to reach out to the faculty member currently teaching the requested course.

What information will I need to supply on the form?

Students should provide as much of the following information as possible:

  • Academic Term (e.g. Fall 2021)
  • Department Instructor
  • Name Course Number (including section if relevant)
  • Course Name

Current and Archived Course Catalogs can be found on OWU’s website and can help with some of this information.

Are past course syllabi a guarantee of future course content or structure?

No. Past syllabi are not a guarantee of course content or expectations for future iterations of a class. Examining past syllabi may provide some indication of what to generally expect in future offerings of the course but courses are always subject to change each semester.

Why do syllabi have a copyright statement as the first page?

Syllabi are the intellectual property of the faculty members who created them. As such, we attach a copyright statement at the beginning of each requested syllabus that reads:

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If you make a request for, or later use, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use, you may be liable for copyright infringement.

Most times, syllabi are requested in order to receive transfer/graduate school credit. This is a common and acceptable reason for requesting syllabi. For more information on copyright and fair use, visit the library’s Copyright & Fair Use for Students guide.
