What is Data Analysis?

It is the process of collecting, reviewing and analyzing data to discover underlying patterns and trends. Data analysis methods include:
 

  • data mining - use of artificial intelligence techniques, neural network and advanced statistical tools to find patterns and trends

  • text mining - the process of applying algorithms to text to analyze the text

  • data visualization - the process of presenting data in a visual context, such as graphs, charts and bars

  • business intelligence - the process of analyzing business data to make informed business decisions

Image result for SPSSstands for Statistical Package for the Social Sciences.  Developed by IBM, it offers advanced statistical analysis, a vast library of machine learning algorithms, text analysis, open source extensibility, integration with big data and seamless deployment into applications.

ferretDataFerrett is a data analysis and extraction tool from the Census Bureau.  It can be used to customize federal, state, and local data, and develop customized spreadsheets, and turn those spreadsheets into graphs and maps.

R The R Project for Statistical Computing is is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS. It is free and open source, and can be downloaded here.
