UC 160: Why I Want to Travel to...

This guide will introduce you to the OWU Libraries' basic services. In particular, it will highlight resources and areas you may find useful in completing your brief essay about where you want to travel and why.

How Do I Check Out a Book?

Your OWU Bishop ID is your library card. Just bring the book and your ID to the front desk of the library, and we'll take it from there.

You will occasionally be asked to enter your "library barcode" when logging into your library account. You will need to login in order to:

  • renew books
  • access a library database from off-campus
  • request a book from another library
  • view your fines

Your barcode number is the small number that appears at the bottom of your OWU Bishop ID:

How Long Can I Keep It?

It really depends on what it is and where it came from.

It general, you can check out most books in the OWU Libraries for up to 5 weeks, and you can renew them up to 3 times for a total of 15 weeks. However, if someone else requests the book while you have it checked out, then you won't be able to renew it. You'll have to wait until they return it to check it out again.

Our Borrow, Renew, Request page has the full details about how many items you can check out at any one time, how long you can keep them, and how many times you can renew them.

What Else Can I Check Out?

In addition to books, you can also check out:

  • Laptops
  • iPads
  • Lockers (both short-term and long-term)
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • Video cameras
  • Course reserves
